Earth Day Community Cleanup!

Hi Neighbours,

Facebook Event – Please RSVP – This will help determine what we need for supplies

It seems that Saturday, April 20, 2024, has garnered the most votes for our community cleanup day. Our designated zone for the trail cleanup is Zone 17 (refer to the attached image). I propose that we commence at the entrance of our neighborhood and progress along both sides of the circle, culminating towards the end of the trail at 6th St/St. George Blvd. Let’s aim to dedicate a couple of hours to our efforts.

In light of safety concerns, I suggest avoiding the area where the campsites were located, particularly the region behind Codiac Transpo and Apex, as they might pose bio-hazards. It would be prudent for the city to dispatch crews equipped with dumpsters for that specific area.

Let’s convene from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the bench at the corner of the neighbourhood where the trail heads to 6th Street. This will ensure everyone has the remainder of their Saturday to enjoy. However, feel free to participate in the cleanup outside of these hours, as there’s plenty of work to be done.

Once we have an estimate of participants, I’ll arrange to collect supplies from the City of Moncton. Below, I’ve included the registration information provided by the city:

Earth Day Cleanup Instructions

THANK YOU FOR REGISTERING FOR THE EARTH DAY CLEANUP! HERE ARE YOUR NEXT STEPS:

  • Pick up your cleaning kits in the Moncton City Hall lobby from April 15 to 19 during working hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).
  • Each kit includes 2 blue garbage bags, 6 clear garbage bags, and 5 pairs of gloves.
  • You can clean up your specific zone from April 19 to 21(within park hours).
  • Once you are finished cleaning your zone, call the City of Moncton Dispatch line at 506-859-2643 indicating the location of the garbage bags, and the City will pick them up.
  • Leave your garbage bags near garbage cans if there are some located on site. Please leave nothing behind other than the waste collected.

Did you find a used needle?

Do not place any needles in waste collection garbage bags. Instead, please opt for one of the safe options below:

  1. Call the City of Moncton’s 24/7 Dispatch Centre at 506-859-2643 to report the used needle.
  2. Fill out the quick and easy online form at: https://www.moncton.ca/report-issue

We would like to thank you for your participation in the Earth Day Cleanup and hope you have a great day!

I’ll also reach out to the city to acknowledge that although we’ve selected Zone 17, covering the entire stretch to 6th St/St. George Blvd may be ambitious given the size of the zone. Hopefully, other groups will sign up for the same zone to bolster our workforce. Additionally, I’ll emphasize that we won’t be addressing the encampment areas due to their need for specialized disposal.

We’ll create an event on Facebook and share information on our community website https://fcna.ca/.

Please spread the word among your neighbors and friends. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in our community.

Best regards,

Steve Kikkert Franklin Crossing Neighbourhood Association – Committee Member
